LiveRhythms

About LiveRhythms

LiveRhythms are a group of 4 musicians who, in conjunction with a roster of trained teachers, facilitate the movement meditation of Gabrielle Roth’s 5Rhythms®

Cello, kora, violin, flute, saxophone, clarinet, voice and plenty of percussion are all woven together with the dancer’s movements in a co-creation that journeys through the wide and wild dynamic range of sound and human emotion

The music is improvised, drawing on relationships built through years of playing together and the teachers skilfully integrate the dance into a coherent whole. A typical class lasts 120 minutes and all sit together at the end to share something of their experience

LiveRhythms play monthly in Kew, south west London, UK

The Classes

The Wave

A 2-hour session typically follows a "wave" of energy, moving from slow, grounded movement to fast, chaotic, and finally, quiet, meditative states.

The Structure

Classes usually begin with a gentle, guided warm-up followed by music that builds intensity, often covering two waves and closing with a circle.

The Environment

Environment: A safe, non-judgmental space, usually with no talking on the dance floor and lights often kept low.

The 5Rhythms

  • Flowing: Fluid, continuous movement, connecting with the breath.
  • Staccato: Angular, sharp, rhythmic, and percussive movements.
  • Chaos: Fast-paced, cathartic, and letting go of control.
  • Lyrical: Light, airy, playful, and creative movement.
  • Stillness: Inner peace, slow motion, and integrating the experience.

Purpose: The practice is designed to help participants move emotions, reduce stress, and explore their own authentic movement

Key Aspects

These lessons are designed for people who want to develop a stronger connection between movement and music. The sessions are welcoming, structured, and focused on steady personal progress rather than performance.
